Over the past two decades, beekeeping has become a popular hobby in many large cities. Hives can now be found on the roofs of office buildings, hotels, and even government offices. Much of this was inspired by news reports about the of bees around the world. Because bees pollinate many of the crops that humans depend on, people became worried about what would happen if their numbers continued to fall. For many city residents, keeping a hive seemed like a simple and way to help. Some companies also began installing hives as a way of showing customers that they cared about the environment. However, some ecologists now argue that the rise of urban beekeeping may be causing problems of its own. Most of the bees kept in hives are honeybees, a single that lives in large colonies. Cities, on the other hand, are also home to many of wild bees, most of which live alone and are often better at pollinating certain native plants. When large numbers of honeybees are introduced, they compete with these wild bees for the of flowers in urban areas. A study conducted in one European city found that areas with a high number of hives tended to have fewer of wild bees. In addition, honeybees can spread diseases to wild bees when they visit the same flowers. For these reasons, experts say that people who want to help bees should focus less on adding hives and more on providing food and shelter. Planting a variety of flowers that bloom at different times of the year, leaving areas of grass uncut, and reducing the use of chemicals in gardens can all benefit wild bees as well as honeybees. Some cities have started asking beekeepers to their hives so that officials can keep track of how many there are in each area. While few people believe that urban beekeeping should be banned, many agree that the number of hives in a city should match the amount of food available.
