「勢いよく向かって（run）」「下に押し倒す（down）」イメージ。車なら衝突して倒し、言葉なら相手の価値を下げ、追跡なら追い詰めて捕らえる意味に派生する。
使われ方

車にはねられる（事故の状況を説明する際、受動態で用いるのが一般的。）
run down a colleague
同僚を悪く言う（陰口や批判など、相手の評判を貶める文脈で使用。）
run down the source of the problem
問題の根源を突き止める（手がかりを追い、最終的に探し出すというニュアンス。）
類義語との違い
- run into: 「偶然出会う」や「（車などが）衝突する」を意味する。run downが追いかけて捕まえる・倒すという能動的な動作を含むのに対し、run intoは接触そのものに焦点がある。
